Glossary of elastomer processing
REACH
REACH is the European Union's chemicals regulation, Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. The name stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals.
What does REACH mean for components?
Under REACH, seals are considered articles. Two points are particularly important for manufacturers and suppliers:
- SVHC candidate list: If an article contains a substance of very high concern (SVHC) in a concentration above 0.1 per cent by weight, the supplier must inform its customers (Article 33).
- Restrictions (Annex XVII): Limits or bans apply to certain substances, for example to PAHs in rubber parts with skin contact or to certain phthalates.
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) extends the candidate list regularly.
