Glossary of elastomer processing
PAH
PAH stands for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (German: PAK). These are organic compounds made of several benzene rings, some of which are considered carcinogenic. In rubber, PAHs can enter the compound mainly through plasticiser oils and carbon black.
Limits for PAHs
In Annex XVII (entry 50), the REACH Regulation limits eight PAHs in rubber and plastic parts that come into prolonged or repeated contact with the skin during normal use: a maximum of 1 mg/kg per PAH, or 0.5 mg/kg for toys and childcare articles. For the German GS mark, the AfPS GS 2019:01 PAK specification sets even stricter values in some cases.
Avoiding PAHs in seals
The compound formulation is decisive: low-PAH plasticiser oils and suitable fillers keep the content low. Compounds can be designed specifically for applications with skin contact or in sensitive areas.
