Glossary of elastomer processing
PFAS
PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a group of several thousand industrial chemicals. Because of their very stable carbon-fluorine bond, they hardly degrade in the environment and are therefore also known as "forever chemicals".
Why is PFAS an issue?
In the EU, a far-reaching restriction of PFAS under the REACH Regulation is being discussed. Individual substances such as PFOA and PFOS are already banned or heavily restricted. Many customers therefore ask whether components contain PFAS.
PFAS and seals
Under the broad definition used in the EU restriction proposal, fluoroelastomers such as FKM/FPM and fluoropolymers such as PTFE are also included. Seals made of EPDM, NBR or silicone generally do not contain PFAS. When choosing a material, we are happy to advise you on PFAS-free alternatives.
PFAS at SIEGEL
Our declaration on the use of PFAS in elastomers and sealing products (German) is available in the download area. For a binding assessment of individual items, please provide the article number, material or compound number and the PFAS definition you apply.
