Glossary of elastomer processing
RoHS
RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances, EU Directive 2011/65/EU. It restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment and therefore also applies to seals installed in such equipment.
Which substances are restricted?
RoHS sets maximum concentrations for ten substances, based on each homogeneous material:
- Lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium: 0.1 % each
- Cadmium: 0.01 %
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE): 0.1 % each
- The plasticisers DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP (phthalates): 0.1 % each, added by Directive (EU) 2015/863
Relevance for seals
Seals in housings, connectors, cable glands or household appliances become part of the electrical device and must therefore be RoHS compliant. A RoHS declaration is therefore standard in the electrical industry.
