Glossary of elastomer processing

CP65 (California Proposition 65)

CP65 stands for California Proposition 65, a 1986 law of the US state of California (Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act). It requires businesses to warn consumers if products contain substances that are on the Proposition 65 list as known to cause cancer or reproductive harm.

What does Proposition 65 regulate?

The State of California maintains a list of several hundred chemicals classified as carcinogenic or toxic to reproduction. Anyone selling products in California that contain one of these substances above certain thresholds must provide a clear warning. The list is extended regularly.

Relevance for seals

Rubber and plastic parts can also contain listed substances, such as certain plasticisers (phthalates), components of carbon black or PAHs. For components that go into products for the US market, customers therefore often request a CP65 declaration from the manufacturer.
